Devanand Bungshee
Since I was a young boy, I have always been interested in sculpting, carving coconut shells and coral and found items on the beach. I fulfilled my childhood dream by attending a university in India to obtain a Fine Arts Degree and returned to Mauritius eager to explore more in the field of bronze sculpture and perfecting patinas (the coloured finish and effects applied to bronze).
I worked as a Fine Arts tutor at MGI for twelve years, after which I set up my own gallery and bronze foundry in Pointe Aux Piments where I continue to produce many bronzes from miniature to five metres high.
I have been creating a sculpture park at the rear of my gallery for a few years which is now nearing completion and I hope to be able to open it to the public in the very near future.
Together with my various figurative bronzes, I also enjoy creating abstract works, the subjects being human form, animals, plants and shells. I work in a very organic way with my abstract shapes, some of which are shown at the exhibition.
